Formation of the collections of Ornamental Floriculture Department of Botanic Garden of TSU reopened in 1990, since the restoration of the Botanic Garden in the structure of the Tver State University. Unfortunately, with a very few exceptions the herbaceous ornamental plant collections of historic garden has not been preserved to this point. Currently, collection fund comprises 46 families, 225 genera, more than 1200 species and more than 500 cultivars of flowering and decorative-deciduous plants.
Particular attention is paid to families of plants such as Orchids (Orchidaceae), Cereals (Gramineae (Poaceae)), sedge (Cyperaceae); genera peons (Paeonia), Heichera, Ligularia, hostas (Hosta), primrose (Primula), Iris, Hemerocallis, spring-flowering ephemeroids and some others. Collections of these plants are completed as fund.
Plants of Decorative flower Department are posted on a variety of thematic expositions combined by systematic, biology and morphology, phyto-geographical principles in a different garden styles. Among them there is a variety of rocky hills, "Cereal Garden", "Hostas Garden", "Shadow Garden", "Flora of Far East and South-East Asia", "Permanent blossom Garden».
The program "Strategy of biodiversity conservation of the Tver region" started in 1998 members of the Department of Decorative flower take part in the implementation of scientific research project "Introduction as a way to preserve biodiversity." One of the main activities of the department is to preserve rare and endangered plants. At the exhibitions department presents 13 species of plants listed in the Red Book of Russia (Astrantia major L., Colchicum autumnale L., Iris pumila Ls, Campanula ossetica Bieb., Cypripedium calceolus L., Gladiolus palustris Gaudin, Paonia kavachensis Aznav., P. lactiflora Pall., P.obovata Maxim., P. tenuifolia L., P. wittmanniana Hartwiss ex Lindl., Papaver orientale L., Pulsatilla vulgaris Mill.), 12 species - in the Red Book of the Tver region.
The largest in Russia by the number of taxa overthrust rank Collection of Iris family (Iridaceae) was assembled from 1990 to 2001. In the collection were tested 87 species, 30 genera, six tribes and three subfamilies. The results of this became the Ph.D. thesis "The results of the primary introduction of representatives of Iridaceae family in the Botanic Garden of Tver State University. Unfortunately, due to the curator's change the collection is gone now.
